If you have a child on the way, you need to be aware of its effect on your oral health. A pregnancy can increase your risk for gum disease and other oral health problems and issues. Be aware that oftentimes individuals may begin to neglect their oral health care so be sure to avoid these pitfalls and continue to clean out your mouth as needed. Poor oral hygiene can lead to preeclampsia, premature delivery and gestational diabetes.

Make sure you’re well aware of your diet and any products you may be taking that could increase your health risks for dental damage. Be aware that while you’re pregnant, you could be an increased risk for gum disease and tooth decay, so you’ll need to continue cleaning out your mouth as needed. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste to clean your teeth and gums. Don’t forget to clean your tongue as well. Furthermore, to reach areas that your brush cannot reach between teeth, use a water flosser or dental floss.
